Zillertal / Hintertux Glacier Summerski

The picture was taken in July 2022 from the Tuxer Fernerhaus. After 2 years at home due to Corona, we tried skiing in summer and found difficult conditions. Though in the early morning, the conditions are okay (not good), the snow turns into slush at temperatures around 10 degrees. It was just too warm.

Sorry for my New Zealand accent when recording my comments; I lived there and can't get rid of it.

What is special about this place

The Hintertux glacier is the only summerski resort in Austria. If this is possible to maintain, it is very much in doubt because it was too warm this year at the Gefrorene Wand and the Olperer. We had difficult but manageable conditions in the morning. Regardless of that, the views up there are stunning. From the platform, you can see into Italy in the direction of the Sand in Taufers and the Tuxer Mountains.  There are many options for hiking, which we used, too. Visiting a large ice cave, which is 50m below the ski track, is possible. It offers rare views of a permafrost glacier.

At 3250m the sun is shining, the views are beautiful.

Regardless of the beauty, the temperatures at 3200m were at 10 degrees, which is too warm!

Where is it and how to get there?

Its located at the end of the Tux valley. Coming from the motorway E45, you would drive down the Zillertal Valley Road 169 to Mayrhofen and then turn into the Tuxertal. From Hintertux you have to take the Gletscherbus 1, 2 and 3 cable car the the plattform at the Geforene Wand (frozen wall) at 3250m height. It is possible to travel by rail to Mayrhofen. The Tux-valley has an excellent bus shuttle service.
