Skiing on a budget

Skiing on a budget is possible.

For me, inexpensive skiing was always the Arber in the Bavarian Forest. Apartment for several people for less than 50 euros per day and an affordable ski pass compared to ski passes from the big, well-known resorts in Austria and Switzerland. Eating and drinking in huts was also significantly cheaper. The ski area is of course not huge, but offers some variety. The Arber has a snowing system that will operate when the air temperatures are low enough. This offers snow security, but also means that if the surrounding ski areas have no snow, everyone drives to the Arber and it can get very crowded.

The Arber ski area is easy to reach from Bodenmais or from Bayrisch Eisenstein on the border with the
Czech Republic. There is a bus service to the valley station of the mountain railways, which is about 10
km from the village. If you drive to the valley station in your own car, you can also consider Langdorf as a
place to stay.

The slopes are very easy, with blue and red slopes predominating. There are no slopes that I would
describe as technically demanding, but that is of course also in the eye of the beholder. My son skied
there for the first time. What is missing in contrast to the large winter sports resorts is the shopping
experience, which is only available to a limited extent, but there is a large glass factory and you can buy
a lot of glass handicrafts, as well as wood carvings. From the supermarket, bakery and butcher
everything is available, as well as numerous restaurants.

My tip:

I take the Silberberg slope in Bodenmais as a first skiing day. It only has one slope, but it is relatively long, wide and easy to access. However, it does not have a snowing system, it
is only possible when there is enough snow. There is also an old mine tunnel that you can visit. Archery
is also offered in summer.

The video was my first attempt to take a video while skiing ever (with a mobile in my hands).

The towns of Bodenmais and Bayrisch Eisenstein can be reached by train and by car. There is a bus shuttle system to the ski slopes on the mountain.
