Thailand

Summary

I was in Thailand twice for a longer time. Both times I worked also there.
Working endless hours also means that there is less time for sightseeing. The plus is, you get to know a different culture.

Working abroad

Initially working abroad became an option, when there was no possibility to work in Germany. I know many people who studied architecture and finished their studies with me who never worked in architecture. One case I knew was somebody who worked in intensive care. I tried the option to work abroad. The first time it was great. I liked my new options, plus I learned skills I would never have learned if I would have stayed at home.
Bangsaray Beach

Palm trees, beach, sun, sea, friendly people, that's how Thailand is known. Thailand also borders a
highly developed country in the Bangkok metropolitan area and resembles a developing country in the
village communities. Thailand is a country of many contrasts. Glittering shopping mall palaces stand next
to corrugated iron shacks. I spent about 4 years there as an employee for international companies.

Quiet places

What is special about this place

When I first got to know Thailand, it was a natural paradise. The first visit was to Krabi and Phuket in the
late 1990's. In Ao Nang there was exactly one hotel and on Phuket there was only one supermarket that
had food refrigeration. That would no longer be conceivable today, at least not in Bangkok and in the
tourist regions. Grocery cooling is just as natural as bean coffee (before there was Nescafe, if at all) and
sandwiches. Thailand is also a real estate bubble. On Phuket, in Pattaya and in Bangkok people have
been and are being built as if there were no tomorrow. This creates jobs for the population, among other
things, but also a lot of problems.

 Construction everywhere

In order to build luxurious apartment buildings in the best locations, entire quarters with simple shop
buildings were rented out and demolished. The local, not so rich population is pushed out of these
locations. Many high-rise apartment buildings are half-empty because they are designed to be
sustainable once the portion that can be sold to foreigners (which is limited) is sold. This also means that
large resources are wasted here. Apart from the hard work on the construction site, the population gets
almost nothing from these projects, because the earnings are canceled out anyway by rich locals or
foreigners who like to stay in the background. The infrastructure such as sewage treatment plants for
dirty water are often not available or far too small and so waste water is discharged into the sea. I don't
want to badmouth Thailand, there are wonderful resorts where you can have a great holiday, only in
Pattaya I wouldn't go into the sea anymore, because of the pollution and as a natural paradise I wouldn't
call the completely built-up holiday regions anymore.

Traffic in Bangkok / Skytrain

On the plus side are still tasty, good and inexpensive food and lots of good weather. As a generale rule,
May can get extremely hot and September can rain a lot as Thailand is in the monsoon region. It is also
a shopper's paradise. By that I don't mean cheap copies, but sometimes very high-quality branded
fashion and alternative fashion.

Where is it and how to get there?

Usually you book a flight to Bangkok/Suvarnabhum Airport. From there you can continue your journey
with regional buses or with regional flights. Buying bus tickets at the counter on site is the cheapest
option.
